Rep. Gohmert’s Statement on the President’s Budget Speech

Capitol Press Releases

Washington - Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-01) released the following statement regarding President Obama’s budget speech this afternoon at George Washington University:

“Today the President presented a budget plan that calls for higher taxes and even more spending. This budget reform map, designed to ‘win the future,’ will only add to the already stratospheric $14 trillion national debt. Presented as a ‘nonpartisan’ approach to solving this nation’s debt crisis, President Obama instead delivered more wasteful spending and tax hikes that will only dim the hopes of a brighter future. I would have hoped after the massive bailouts and stimulus spending that exceeded anything ever attempted in the world's history, this administration should have learned that taking from those who earned and giving to the administration's supporters does not revive the economy. This plan will only shackle the dreams and prosperity of America’s future generations. Real change can only occur by cutting out-of-control government spending.”

Congressman Louie Gohmert is the Vice Chair of the Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security. Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, Louie was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas. He also served as Chief Justice of Texas' 12th Court of Appeals.

Please sir, with openness, and honesty, prayerfully engage in dialog with integrity and join with others to find a way to guide our nation out of the terrible crisis we are in.  What you do now will affect our children—our nation’s future.  It is no longer appropriate to play the political games of “how bad is our president;” i.e. he is planning a party on August 3rd,” or “No new taxes, an ill conceived concept that has not really worked since inception, in which is the seeds of our present condition.  Let’s raise taxes, or whatever we must do to pay our bills, return our country to solvency and quit these terrible political games of “ain’t it awful.”  Democrats and republicans alike are at fault.  Stand back look at what is happening in Washington.  I do not see the give and take of polical dialog, the ingredients of looking for the common good of all.  All I see is embarassing politics, testing whether this nation or any nation can have an informed electorate that can preserve government by the people, of the people and FOR the people—not just the selected, rich and/or advantaged.

My heart is heavy.  Your people need your help.  Do not let us down.
