In the last few months several local industries have shuttered their doors, sending hundreds of East Texans out to look for work.

To give a little jump-start to the local job market, U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Tyler, is helping launch the “East Texas Job Fair” on Monday at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center in Lufkin.

The congressman is teaming up with the Lufkin/Angelina County Chamber of Commerce, Deep East Texas Council of Governments, Lufkin/Angelina County Economic Development and Workforce Solutions to give hope to those who are looking for a new job — and a new start.

“It’s easy to be discouraged by the gloomy economic forecasts broadcast by national leaders and media,” Gohmert said in a press release. “But the truth is there is hope and there are jobs out there.”

New businesses and employers are adding to the list right up until the day of, a release stated.

“My office and our partnering organizations want to do everything we can to help bring together the diverse East Texas job market with our capable citizens for the greater benefit of our community and economy,” Gohmert said. “We look forward to seeing more employers register for these events and a strong turnout from East Texas job seekers.”

A few of the many prospective employers include Angelina College, Brazos Transit District, Brookshire Brothers, City of Lufkin, City of Nacogdoches, Deep East Texas Council of Governments, Etech, Inc., Lockheed Martin, Lufkin State School, Memorial Health System of East Texas, Pilgrim’s Pride, Suddenlink Communications and Stephen F. Austin State University, among many more.

“Dozens of employers will be at our job fair to meet with hardworking East Texans to fill over 1,000 available positions,” Gohmert said.

Employer participation and job seeker admission is free. For more information or to register online, visit http://www.gohmert.house.gov/ or call Gohmert’s office toll free at: (866) 535-6302.
