Representative Louie Gohmert was sworn in January 4, 2005 by Speaker Dennis Hastert as Congressman for the First District of Texas. Louie took office after winning his party's nomination in a hotly contested six-person primary and ultimately unseating a four-term incumbent in the general election.

Prior to being elected to serve in Congress, Louie Gohmert was elected to three terms as District Judge in Smith County, Texas. As District Judge, Louie’s disposition of over 10,000 cases, ranging from capital murder to complex civil litigation, earned him respect among his peers. During his tenure on the bench, Louie gained national and international attention for some of his innovative and conservative rulings on issues such as illegal aliens, drug trafficking, AIDS and illegal gambling. Louie was later appointed by Texas Governor Rick Perry to complete a term as Chief Justice of the 12th Court of Appeals.

Once sworn into the House of Representatives, Louie received assignments to three House committees which are beneficial to the citizens of East Texas: the House Committees on Judiciary, Resources and Small Business.

Louie's extensive judicial knowledge stemming from years in the court room, serve him well on the House Committee on the Judiciary. Due to the legal nature of the Committee's work it has been customary for members to have a legal background, though he is the only former trial judge or chief justice on the Committee. The Committee has jurisdiction over matters such as: constitutional issues, the Federal courts, crime, law enforcement, immigration, patents, copyrights, internet, anti-trust and administrative law. Louie serves on three subcommittees: the Subcommittee on Immigration, Border Security, and Claims; Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law; Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism, and Homeland Security; while also volunteering as a resource for the Court Rules and Intellectual Property Subcommittee.

Because East Texas is blessed with a wide array of natural resources, Louie is pleased to be able to work within the House Committee on Resources. The Committee works to explore our natural resources and Louie works to ensure America uses the affordable, domestic sources of energy we have at home while providing jobs for Texas. He serves as a voice for East Texas on two of the Committee's most important subcommittees: Energy and Mineral Resources as well as Water and Power. He was also appointed by the chairman to serve as a member of the National Environmental Protection Act task force to work to completely reform the processes.

Small businesses play a vital role in the economy of East Texas and the United States. Louie uses his assignment to the House Committee on Small Business to ensure small businesses are able to thrive and prosper without excessive federal government red tape. Louie serves on the Subcommittee on Regulatory Reform and Oversight.

Louie was also appointed by Speaker Dennis Hastert to the Republican Policy Committee. In addition, the Republican Conference selected Louie to serve as Vice-Chairman of the House Voter Values Public Affairs Team and a member of the Lawsuit Abuse Team.

Louie Gohmert received his undergraduate degree from Texas A&M University, where he was Class President and served as a Brigade Commander in the Corps of Cadets, and was selected for Who's Who. He was also Class President and Who's Who while attending Baylor School of Law. Louie is a veteran having served his country for four years as an active duty Captain in the U.S. Army as a result of an Army scholarship at Texas A&M.

Louie Gohmert and his wife Kathy are the proud parents of three daughters: Katy, Caroline, and Sarah. The Gohmert family attends Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, where Louie has been a deacon and still currently teaches Sunday school.

Having grown up in Mt. Pleasant, Texas, Louie has gone on to be an extremely active volunteer in East Texas. He has served as President of the South Tyler Rotary Club, Director of Leadership Tyler, and as Director of Centrepoint Ministries. Louie, an Eagle Scout himself, has served on the Boy Scout East Texas District Board of Directors.

Louie stands for re-election to Texas' First Congressional District on Tuesday, November 7, 2006.
